Transforming user journeys for Hong Kong Public Libraries

LCSD case study image

As part of Hong Kong’s Smart City Blueprint, we redesigned the Leisure and Cultural Services Department’s Smart Library System using design thinking.

15 stakeholder interviews700+ user surveys120+ workshop participants3 prototype sets

The challenge

The Smart Library System serves people of every age, background and level of tech-savviness across more than 80 libraries. LCSD needed one journey that works for all of them, improves facilities and services, and supports a city-wide reading culture.

Our approach

We mapped the user journey across every touchpoint through stakeholder interviews, self-completion surveys and digital and face-to-face workshops with library users and staff. The journey map set the design principles for the prototypes.

The result

We co-designed, built, tested and validated three sets of system prototypes with stakeholders, and delivered UX and UI solutions plus venue design recommendations.

90%target share of users using library services independently, online and on-site
